Some people are born with a green thumb, or a knack for making things grow.  Others are born all thumbs and have a knack for barking their shins.  David Dodge is a member of the second group.

The Dodges - husband, wife and five-year-old daughter Kendal - set out to travel to Guatemala one bright spring day.  They couldn't get a boat and they couldn't get a plane, bud they had an automobile, and Dodge had a vast confidence in himself even if Mama and Kendal didn't, and they knew that Guatemala was somewhere off down that way, south.  So they piled all their portable possessions into the car and started out.
